“How art thou fallen from heaven, O shining star, son of the morning, thou who looketh so brilliant at dawning?”
-Isaiah 14:12
“Undoubtedly, the inner Sun of each of us also has its shadow and the latter fulfills its specific mission in the depth of our own consciousness. Obviously such a shadow, such a logical reflection is the psychological trainer, Lucifer, the tempter.”
-Samael Aun Weor, Hell, the Devil, and Karma
Lucifer, the Famous Fallen Angel
Lucifer, the famous fallen angel, plays an important role in the initiatic path. The name Lucifer means “bearer of light” and references to him are found in apocryphal Jewish and Orthodox Christian scriptures as an angel cast out of heaven. In the gnostic and esoteric traditions Lucifer takes on deep significance as a guide and trainer in the difficult initiatic process.
Shadow of the Christ
Just as the Sun as Christ shines and bring light and life to creation, it also casts a shadow. That shadow is Lucifer, an aspect of the Christ who exists within every human, within our own internal psychological darkness.
Christ-Lucifer tests by way of temptation and challenges, thereby providing rigorous training in the psychological gymnasium.
“We know that beyond the body, the affections and of the mind, is the internal divine Logoi. Unquestionably, that which is ineffable, that which is real, projects its own reflection, its own shadow, within ourselves, here and now. Undoubtedly, the inner Sun of each of us also has its shadow and the latter fulfills its specific mission in the depth of our own consciousness.
Obviously such a shadow, such a logical reflection is the psychological trainer, Lucifer, the tempter. In the psychological gymnasium of human existence, a trainer is always required, with the purpose of educing powers, faculties, extraordinary virtues, etc. In what manner could virtues spring forth from us, if temptation did not exist? Only through the struggle, the contrast, temptation and rigorous esoteric discipline can there spring forth in us the flowers of virtue.”
-Samael Aun Weor
Aspect of the Christ
Lucifer always works in collaboration with the Christ. Lucifer is not the anti-Christ, he is an aspect of the Christ, and Lucifer will never bring a temptation that violates the cosmic laws.
“The whole path of initiation is guided by the Luciferic-Dog of the Knight, driven by the divine didactic of Lucifer the Tempter. There exists in Luciferic temptation a divine didactic, to transform us into Gods. Lucifer-Prometheus is the double of the Solar Logos, the Cosmic Christ, within us here and now.
Lucifer is the revolutionary force in the depths of our sexual system, and is both a stairway to hell, and a stairway to heaven. Where is the evil in Lucifer. Temptations, trials become our initiations. Without temptation there cannot be virtue. The dragon, or Lucifer, educates us in the sexual gymnasium. We must defeat the dragon and then the serpent of magical powers awakens.”
-Samael Aun Weor
Discernment to Pass the Tests
Discernment is necessary to know what is beneficial for the path, the Being, and the internal work, so as to not fall into temptation and fail these tests and challenges.
With a connection to the love of the inner Being and the Christ we will not completely despair at the difficulties and humiliations we suffer under his guidance.
And to our astonishment, we find a love for Lucifer, because his temptations allow us to triumph over our internal density, psychological sleep, unconsciousness of the ego.
“I comprehend brother / sister,
your great fear of Lucifer.
Yet your vision of him will change
when you realize the Great Work one day. [ ]
Regarding Him the Lord Jehova says,
‘You were the seal of perfection,
Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
You were in Eden, the garden of God;
Every precious stone was your covering:
The sardius, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper,
sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold.
The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes
Was prepared for you on the day you were created.
“You were the anointed cherub who protects;
I established you;
You were on the holy mountain of God;
You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.
You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created,
Till iniquity was found in you.’ (Ezekiel 28:11-19)
For all of this:
Believe me, I love my Lucifer!”
