The three basic components of alchemical transformation are fire, water, and earth. These components are manifested in the chemical elements of sulphur, mercury, and salt, respectively.
These elements are within us, physically and psychologically. When working with transmutation practices, there is a spiritual transformation of these elements.
Sulphur is the internal fire element, the sexual energy and vitality. The highest aspects of the sexual fire is the Divine Mother Kundalini, the force of purification. The poisonous aspect of the fire is the arsenic sulphur- our internal egos of lust.
The Element of Sulphur
Sulphur (sulfur) is a common element found in crystalline form in nature, and is an essential micronutrient for life. Sulphur is used in fertilizer, and pesticides and matches, as well as in topical medicine, particularly for skin disorders. Sulphur is called liu huang in traditional Chinese medicine and resolves toxicity, kills parasites, and supports the ministerial fire.
Sulphur and the Underworld
“Its streams will be turned into pitch, And its loose earth into brimstone, And its land will become burning pitch.”
-Isaiah 34:9
Sulphur and its characteristic smell have been associated with hell in the Abrahamic religious traditions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), based on Biblical references to “fire and brimstone”.
Brimstone, the older term for sulphur, is abundant within the Earth’s surface, venting up through natural fissures, brightly colored pools, and in dramatic fashion in volcanic eruptions. Sulphur’s acrid odor in the form of sulphur dioxide is also present during lightning strikes.
The foul-smelling odor, arising from strange cracks, pools, and volcanoes in the Earth became associated with hell, a place of great chaos and suffering. Lightning, with its sulphur-like smell, was also used in the Bible to indicate the wrath of God.
Spiritual Practices
“Bring hither fire, and hither sulphur bring to purge the palace.”
-Homer, The Odyssey
“An efficacious remedy in order to liberate oneself from [astral] larvae is to carry sulphur powder inside of our shoes. The ethereal vapors of the sulphur disintegrate the larvae.”
-Samael Aun Weor, Occult Medicine and Practical Magic
“Sulfur, for example, disintegrates larvae. Other smudges are necessary, yet one must know how to use them. You have to burn sulfur for nine days in a row in order to purify the atmosphere of that house and to cleanse it from astral larvae. [CAUTION: Do not breathe the toxic smoke of burning sulfur.] Later, you should have continued with the other smudges, because frankincense and myrrh are very useful, but they must not be mixed with sulfur since they are incompatible.”
-Samael Aun Weor, Beyond Death
Sulphur can be used to cleanse astral larvae from the body and home. It is especially recommended to use sulphur periodically to cleanse the space where we do spiritual practices.
Astral larvae are invisible parasitic entities engendered from misuse of the sexual energy. They tend to collect in places where people gather, creating a cluttered and energetically draining astral atmosphere.
Without cleansing we can become accustomed to that atmosphere, just as it is possible to become accustomed to a cluttered physical space.
The incense and fires traditionally used in temples and places of worship are meant to provide a truly purified space for spiritual work, in contrast to common life atmospheres.
Being in nature is often healing, because wild natural places do not collect as much astral larvae and mental formations as human occupied spaces.
To cleanse the home do the following practice:
Be sure to keep all people and pets out of the room you are going to cleanse.
Light a small charcoal in a fireproof container while praying to the god of fire Agni to cleanse and purify your home. Ask your Divine Mother to bless the element of the sulphur. Take a deep breath, exhale with the mantra Ssssss and scoop some powdered sulphur onto the lit charcoal. It will start to emit a blue flame, and also a poisonous gas. Immediately leave the room and close the door.
Give it at least a half hour or more, then you can enter back into the space and open the window to ventilate. Repeat for 3 days in a row, or if necessary 9 days in a row.
You can also sprinkle sulphur powder in your shoes (do not ignite) to help eliminate astral larvae from your body.
